Francesca Bonini, The "Lectura Thomasina" of William of Peter of Godin and the question "Utrum esse et essentia differant in rebus creates", in "Archiv für mittelalterliche Philosophie und Kultur" 21 (2015), 97-126
This paper takes into account the Lectura Thomasina, the commentary on the Sentences of William of Peter of Godin, one of the first Thomists engaged in the conservation and defence of Aquinas’s thought. Particular attention is paid to the question concerning the distinction between esse and essentia in created beings, traditionally considered of great importance for Aquinas and the early Thomistic school. The sources employed by Cardinal Godin in dealing with the issue are analysed and his position is compared to those of Henry of Ghent and Giles of Rome, two of the main critics of Aquinas’ doctrines.
